Prior 1990s, the initiate objective of a travel was “to know” and “to visit” destinations.  Since 1990s, when alternatives tourism and its destinations have been introduced, the motivation, purpose of visit, travel patterns and trend of tourism began to change. Strategic issues on environmental conservation and local culture have become the concern in tourism industry.

Current visitors put more attention to the impact of their visits to local people’s welfare, environmental damage, and social change. They put more emphasis to reduce negative impact of their visit to the sites and people.  Therefore, demand for service and quality of experience is highly concerned by visitors, and values of attractions, both cultural and environmental at tourism destinations are required to meet visitor’s needs.

A tourism destination requires innovation and creativity in order to provide the quality service, values of its attractions, as well as different visitors’ experience. Tourism destination management is necessary to develop and integrate a variety of tourism products (attractions, accommodations, food and beverage businesses, information center and other supporting services) in order to achieve the common goals.

Challenge faced in the development and management of tourism destination is how a tourism destination gives benefits to the community, government and other tourism stakeholders in the tourism destinations and at the same time providing tourism products and quality service for the enhancement experiences for visitors. Other challenge is to integrate various attractions, develop collaboration, and shared responsibility by various parties in term of management and promotion. We believe that each tourism destination has unique resources and attractions. This is an opportunity for each destination to provide creative, competitive and marketable tourism services and products. Models of management and marketing strategies for each destination is different one to another, depends on characteristics, needs, facilities and available resources. A sustainable tourism destination is a destination that offers the benefits to related stakeholders through the visitations and consumption.
