DESMA Center and Ministry of Tourism Formulate Strategy for Tourism Event Industry Roadmap
Author: Dani Fauzi, Programme Officer
The tourism event industry in Indonesia is one of the important pillars of the growth of the national creative economy and tourism sector. With a gross income contribution of IDR 84.4 trillion by 2024 and involving more than 8.7 million workers, this sector shows great potential as an economic driver. However, the event tourism industry faces significant challenges such as infrastructure inequality, limited professional human resources, and suboptimal coordination between the central government, local governments, and private actors. In addition, rising production costs and fiscal policies are additional pressures that must be addressed immediately so that the competitiveness of this industry can be maintained and improved.
In response to these needs, DESMA Center, in collaboration with the Assistant Deputy for Event Strategy under the Deputy for Event Organizer Development at the Ministry of Tourism, is currently developing a Roadmap Study for the Development of Indonesia’s Tourism Event Industry. This study focuses on formulating an integrated, systematic, and data-driven strategy to address existing challenges while leveraging major opportunities in thematic event trends and experience-based tourism at both regional and global levels. The roadmap is intended to serve as a key reference in supporting the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045, the National Tourism Development Master Plan (RIPPARNAS) 2026–2045, and the implementation of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025–2029, particularly in the tourism sector. As part of the document development methodology, DESMA Center carried out coordination meeting with Asistant Deputy Units of Event Strategi and MICE, The Indonesia Ministry of Tourism in Jakarta, 27 May 2025.

With a projected growth of 4.92% in the tourism event industry in 2025, and an estimated gross revenue of IDR 88.6 trillion (equivalent to USD 5.87 billion), this roadmap will serve as a strategic reference for national and regional governments, industry players, and academics in developing a robust tourism event ecosystem in Indonesia. Through stronger cross-sector collaboration and evidence-based policymaking, the event industry is expected to contribute more significantly to national economic growth—strengthening Indonesia’s position as a leading destination for tourism events in both regional and international arenas, while also driving innovation and competitiveness in the tourism sector for the future.
